Overview
The Appletree Skipper Downwind Foilboard is a dedicated downwind SUP foil platform from Dutch shaper Appletree Surfboards. Built around a teardrop outline with soft edges and a rounded bottom profile, the Skipper Downwind is engineered for efficient paddling, clean foil engagement, and predictable touchdowns during open-ocean runs. The board uses Appletree's full carbon fiber construction paired with their proprietary 50K closed-cell foam core — a material rated to withstand 50,000 kg per square meter while remaining light and waterproof. The layup relies on vacuum lamination with epoxy resin injection, a process Appletree uses across its line to optimize the fiber-to-resin ratio and prevent delamination.
The foil mount uses FUTURES oneshot boxes set into a CNC-machined panel of ultra-high-density PET honeycomb sandwiched in carbon fiber, providing a secure and durable connection point. The resulting board is notably thin and stiff, which translates to a direct feel between rider input and foil response.

Who It's For
Appletree positions the Skipper Downwind toward experienced riders looking for a high-performance downwind foiling platform. The thin, stiff construction rewards confident technique — the board transmits foil feedback directly, which suits riders who already have comfort on foil and want that connected, responsive feel during runs. It also doubles as a light-wind wing foil option for riders seeking a single versatile hull.
The narrow versions are tailored for speed-focused riders working higher-period open ocean swells, where a slimmer outline tracks well and sheds water efficiently. The wide variants add stability for choppier, shorter-period conditions where extra volume and a broader platform help with paddle-up consistency. Riders in the 70–90 kg range will typically land in the 90 L to 110 L window, sizing up or down based on paddle fitness and typical swell conditions.
In the Lineup
Within Appletree's foilboard range, the Skipper Downwind sits alongside several purpose-built siblings: the Skipper Wing (optimized for wing foiling), the Skipper Midlength (a crossover prone and light-wind platform in shorter lengths from 37 L to 97 L), and the Skipper Short (a compact surf-foil shape). The Downwind model is the longest and most volume-dense in the family, purpose-shaped for paddle-up starts and glide efficiency rather than maneuverability.
Appletree has since released the Skipper Downwind V2, which introduces a dual-rocker system, refined rail profiles, and updated hull shaping. The original Skipper Downwind remains available at retailers and represents a proven platform at a lower price point. In the broader downwind foilboard market, it competes with boards like the Sunova Casey downwind series and the KT Surfing Dragonfly, both of which target a similar experienced-rider segment with full-carbon builds and comparable size ranges.
