Overview

The Armstrong Downwind Foilboard is Armstrong's core downwind SUP foil board, built to serve as an accessible entry point into downwind foiling without sacrificing on-foil performance. Spanning five sizes from 96 L to 140 L, the board pairs a wider-than-race outline with a hull shape tuned for quick water starts and stable paddling. Armstrong designed the Downwind around their Forward Geometry (FG) platform, which positions the foil tracks further forward to reduce swing weight and sharpen turning response once on foil. Construction uses a carbon and PVC Innegra sandwich layup reinforced by Armstrong's dual carbon stringer system — a pair of i-beam stringers running top-to-bottom through the board that tie directly into the proprietary carbon foil tracks. A board bag is included with purchase.

The hull features a subtle nose rocker that helps the board climb onto bumps during paddle-ups, paired with a clean tail exit intended to reduce drag as the foil engages. The deck grip uses raised central bars above the foil tracks and elevated corner blocks to give riders tactile foot-placement cues without needing to look down.

Who It's For

The Downwind Foilboard targets riders who are progressing into downwind foiling from SUP or wing foiling backgrounds, as well as intermediate downwinders who value stability during paddle-ups and restarts. The wider outline relative to Armstrong's race-oriented Downwind Performance and Downwind Ocean boards gives newer downwind foilers a more forgiving platform, particularly in confused or cross-chop conditions. Larger sizes like the 128 L and 140 L suit heavier riders or those prioritizing easy water starts, while the 96 L and 106 L cater to lighter or more experienced paddlers comfortable on a narrower platform.

Wind range leans toward moderate-to-strong downwind conditions where open-ocean swell or wind chop provides bump energy. The board can also double as a light-wind wing foil platform for riders who want one board to cover multiple disciplines, though it is primarily shaped for paddle-in downwind use.

In the Lineup

Armstrong's current downwind range has expanded into three tiers. The Downwind Foilboard sits as the all-rounder — the widest and most stability-oriented option in the lineup. Above it, the Downwind Ocean board uses a shorter, narrower outline per volume for quicker rail-to-rail transitions on open-ocean runs, aimed at experienced riders chasing agility. The now-discontinued Downwind Performance board occupied a similar advanced niche with an elongated, narrow hull tuned for glide and competitive paddling. Armstrong's newest addition, the Downwind Mk III, introduces a displacement-style hull focused on acceleration and early lift, offered in a slightly different size spread (95 L–135 L).

For buyers cross-shopping other brands, the Downwind Foilboard competes in the same space as boards like the KT Surfing Drifter and the Starboard Downwind SUP — all-around downwind platforms that balance paddle-up ease with respectable on-foil maneuverability. The Armstrong's FG track positioning and carbon stringer construction distinguish it on stiffness and foil connection.
