Overview

The Armstrong Wing 150L & 180L Foilboard is a dedicated beginner wing foil board built by Armstrong Foils, a New Zealand-based brand with a strong reputation in the hydrofoil space. Unlike boards adapted from intermediate designs, the Wing 150L and 180L were purpose-shaped from the ground up for first-time wing foilers. The board pairs a wide, high-volume outline with construction and on-deck learning aids that aim to reduce the steep learning curve associated with getting on foil for the first time.

Armstrong uses a hybrid bamboo–PVC construction on these boards, reinforced by a dual carbon stringer system that runs the length of the deck. This combination targets both stiffness — so riders feel a direct connection to the foil below — and long-term durability, which matters on a board that will inevitably absorb low-speed impacts during the learning phase. A swept wedge nose profile is designed to prevent the board from catching or pearling during slow-speed touchdowns, while the reduced-area bottom shape helps the board release from the water more cleanly during takeoff attempts.

Who It's For

These boards target absolute beginners who have little or no foiling experience and need maximum stability on the water. The generous volume and width provide enough flotation and lateral balance for a rider to comfortably stand, handle the wing, and practice water starts before worrying about foil technique. The 180L size suits heavier riders or anyone who wants extra stability margin, while the 150L works for lighter or slightly more confident learners.

Several on-deck features reinforce the beginner focus. Foot position indicators help new riders find a consistent stance without guessing, foil track indicators provide a visual reference for mast placement as riders experiment with foil position, and multiple footstrap screw plugs let riders add or reposition straps as their confidence grows. Once a rider progresses past the initial learning stage, the boards can still serve as light-wind cruisers where extra volume keeps you floating in marginal conditions.

In the Lineup

The Wing 150L and 180L sit at the entry point of Armstrong's wing foil board range. Above them, the Armstrong Wing FG line picks up where these boards leave off — the FG series spans roughly 34 L to 135 L in ten sizes, uses a narrower outline and an extended foil box design, and is aimed at intermediate to advanced riders looking to downsize. The FG represents the second generation of Armstrong's wing board shape, refining the nose profile and volume distribution for earlier planing and less drag. A rider who learns on the Wing 150L or 180L would typically step down into an FG board once they can consistently get on foil and ride comfortably.

In the broader market, the Wing 150L and 180L compete with other high-volume beginner wing boards such as the Fanatic Sky Wing and the Naish Hover Wing GS in their largest sizes. Armstrong's differentiator is the integrated learning-aid system — the foot and foil track indicators — plus the brand's ecosystem of foils and masts that share the same mounting standard.
