Overview
The Axis Aluminum 19mm Mast is a foil mast built around a thicker-than-average 19mm diameter profile, produced by New Zealand-based Axis Foils. Where most foil brands ship masts with a 15mm cross-section, Axis opted for the larger diameter to increase torsional and lateral stiffness without stepping up to carbon construction. The result is an aluminum mast that Axis says delivers 2.24 times the stiffness of a standard 15mm mast — a claim the brand arrived at through computer-aided engineering analysis before production. Seven lengths are available, from a compact 450mm up to a 1050mm option, giving riders a single mast platform that covers everything from flat-water cruising to deep-water downwind runs.
The mast connects to the board via the Axis base plate and to the fuselage through the brand's proprietary "Doodad" fitting. That two-piece junction is shared across the Axis foil ecosystem, so the aluminum mast is compatible with the full Axis foil line, including both the Black and Red fuselage options.

Who It's For
The Axis Aluminum 19mm Mast covers a wide skill range. Beginners and intermediate riders benefit from its affordability and the direct, predictable feel that the stiffer profile provides — particularly useful when learning pumping technique or first getting up on foil. Because the price per mast stays relatively low, progressing riders can own multiple lengths and swap between them as conditions or disciplines change, without committing to a carbon investment.
More experienced foilers also reach for the aluminum mast when pairing it with larger front wings in the 1050 cm² range and above, where the extra stiffness helps manage the increased lift and load. For disciplines like wing foiling, kite foiling, windsurf foiling, and tow-in foiling, the 900mm and 1050mm lengths are the most common choices, while the shorter 450mm–680mm options suit prone foiling, SUP foiling in shallow water, or riders who simply prefer a lower ride height.
In the Lineup
Within the Axis catalog, the Aluminum 19mm Mast sits as the entry-level and all-around mast option beneath the brand's carbon mast offerings. It shares the same 19mm profile diameter and mounting hardware, so riders can move to a carbon mast later without changing any other components in the setup. The aluminum line has been a staple of the Axis range since at least 2022 and remains in production across all seven lengths.
Compared to aluminum masts from other brands — such as the Lift Foils aluminum mast or the Slingshot Hover Glide aluminum option — the Axis mast's 19mm section is a distinguishing feature. Most competitors use a narrower profile, which makes the Axis noticeably stiffer at the cost of slightly more drag through the water. For riders already invested in the Axis ecosystem, the aluminum mast is the most affordable way to add a second or third mast length to the quiver.
