Overview

The Axis Skinny Rear Wing is a carbon rear stabilizer designed for hydrofoil setups where reduced drag and higher speed are priorities. Produced by New Zealand-based Axis Foils, the Skinny line was developed alongside the brand's faster-running ARTPRO front wings, which demanded a lower-drag tail wing to unlock their full speed potential. The naming convention reflects each model's dimensions in millimeters — span followed by chord — so the 362/50, for example, has a 362 mm span and a 50 mm chord. Across the standard range (365/55 through 358/35), span varies by only 7 mm while chord drops dramatically, reducing wetted area and drag without sacrificing the pitch-control benefits of a wide wingspan. The design uses flat, narrow-chord, high-span shaping with a small amount of downturn at the tips.

Axis also offers two Ultra High Modulus (UHM) carbon variants — the 358/30 and 358/25. These stiffer, thinner-chord models are built for downwind foiling only and are not intended for wing foiling, as the reduced chord cannot handle the higher loading involved.

Who It's For

The Skinny rear wing suits intermediate to advanced foilers looking to reduce drag and increase top-end speed without giving up pitch stability. Riders who are heavier or earlier in their progression tend to pair well with the larger-chord options — the 55, 50, and 45 mm models — which offer more surface area and a greater margin of control. Lighter or more experienced riders can step down to the 40 or 35 mm chord sizes, trading that comfort buffer for further drag reduction.

The UHM models (358/30 and 358/25) occupy a different niche entirely. These are pro-level components designed exclusively for downwind foiling, where sustained glide and minimal resistance matter most. They should not be used in wing foiling setups. Among the standard sizes, the 362/50 is widely regarded as the most popular starting point for riders new to the Skinny line.

Within the Axis rear-wing catalog, the Skinny line sits above the Progressive rear wings in terms of speed-oriented performance. The Progressive range uses wider chords and offers more roll stability, making it a better fit for intermediate riders or those prioritizing carving feel over outright speed. The Skinny line narrows the chord and raises the aspect ratio, borrowing the Progressive's precise turn initiation while shedding drag. Axis also produces a Surf Skinny variant (available in 300/45 and 320/48 sizes) tailored for wave riding with shorter spans suited to surf-specific fuselage setups.

Riders typically move from a Progressive rear wing to a Skinny as they progress, keeping the same front wing and fuselage to isolate the change. Comparable tail wings from other brands include options in the narrow-chord stabilizer category, but the Skinny line's seven-size spread — from the forgiving 365/55 down to the race-oriented 358/25 UHM — gives riders an unusually fine-grained progression path within a single product family.
