Overview

The Axis Surge Front Wing is a wave-focused hydrofoil front wing from New Zealand-based Axis Foils, released as part of their 2025–2026 lineup. Built from Ultra-High Modulus (UHM) carbon, the Surge is designed around back-foot surfing, tight turns, and linking sections on the wave face. It's the first Axis wing to incorporate a curved "moustache" planform shape, a design choice aimed at improving roll response during wave riding while preserving glide and pump efficiency. The Surge is available in six sizes — 740, 780, 830, 890, 950, and 1010 — spanning a wide range of rider weights and wind conditions.

Axis designed the Surge to sit at the intersection of surf performance and cross-discipline versatility. It draws on design DNA from the brand's Fireball model for forward drive and from the Spitfire for carving characteristics, while offering a broader usable speed range than either predecessor. The wing is compatible with wing foiling, prone foiling, SUP foiling, and parawing riding, making it one of the more versatile wave-oriented options in the Axis catalog.

Who It's For

The Axis Surge is aimed at intermediate to advanced foilers who prioritize wave riding across one or more disciplines. Riders who drop their wing on a wave face, fly a parawing into swell, or paddle into waves prone will find the Surge tuned for committed, loaded turns and smooth rail-to-rail transitions. Its early lift and forgiving pump cadence also make the larger sizes (950, 1010) accessible for progressing intermediates who want to develop their wave-riding technique on foil.

Size selection matters with the Surge. The larger 950 and 1010 sizes suit lighter winds and heavier riders, providing low-end torque to make small, weak waves foilable. The mid-range 830 and 890 cover the broadest conditions for average-weight riders. The smaller 740 and 780 sizes are geared toward lighter riders or powered conditions where top-end control is the priority. Axis notes that riders who spend most of their time at the top of the speed range should consider downsizing.

In the Lineup

Within the Axis range, the Surge occupies a dedicated wave-performance slot that sits between the freeride versatility of the ART V2 and the high-aspect downwind focus of the Fireball and Tempo. It effectively supersedes the Spitfire as Axis's primary surf-oriented wing, offering a wider speed range while retaining tight turning ability. Where the Fireball excels at linking flat-water bumps on long downwind runs and the ART V2 covers all-around freeride duty, the Surge is purpose-built for riders whose sessions revolve around wave faces and critical sections.

For buyers cross-shopping other brands, the Surge competes in the high-aspect surf wing category — a segment that has grown rapidly as riders seek foils that combine wave maneuverability with efficient glide between sections. Its ~9.5 aspect ratio places it in a similar design space to other modern surf-oriented front wings, though its UHM carbon construction and moustache planform distinguish it within the category.
