Overview

The 2023 Duotone Slick D/Lab Foil Wing is the premium-tier version of Duotone's freeride and freestyle wing, built around an Aluula composite frame rather than the standard Dacron used in the regular Slick. Designed by Ken Winner, the D/Lab construction replaces both the leading edge and strut with Aluula material, which Duotone states is roughly 50% stiffer and yields approximately 15% less overall weight compared to the Dacron equivalent. The canopy uses Duotone's MOD3 fabric, a higher-modulus material with significantly less stretch under load, helping the wing hold its designed profile across changing wind pressures. Two small battens per side reduce canopy flutter, and the wing includes a Mini Boom handle system that allows continuous hand repositioning along the strut.

Who It's For

The Slick D/Lab targets intermediate-to-advanced wing foilers who prioritize light weight and frame stiffness for freestyle and powered freeride sessions. Its reduced weight makes pumping more efficient and rotational tricks faster to initiate, while the stiffer Aluula frame resists deformation in gusts — a trait that becomes especially relevant in smaller sizes at the upper end of their wind range. The Mini Boom setup suits riders who shift hand position frequently, whether for wave riding transitions or trick setups.

Riders still progressing toward consistent foiling may find the standard Dacron Slick a better match; the regular version offers slightly more low-end power at a considerably lower price point. The D/Lab is oriented toward pilots who already have reliable board skills and want a lighter, more responsive tool for expanding their trick repertoire or covering wider wind windows without size changes.

In the Lineup

Within Duotone's 2023 wing range, the Slick D/Lab sits at the top of the freeride-freestyle line. Below it, the standard Slick shares the same outline and Mini Boom concept but uses a Dacron frame at a lower price. The Slick SLS occupies a middle tier between the two, upgrading selected construction elements without the full Aluula treatment. On the freerace side, Duotone offers the Unit and Unit D/Lab, which use a longer wingspan and are oriented more toward speed and upwind angle than freestyle maneuverability.

The 2024 Slick D/Lab succeeded this model with further refinements, so the 2023 version now appears at discounted pricing through remaining retail stock. Comparable premium Aluula-framed wings from other brands include the Ensis Spin and the F-One Strike V3 CWC, both of which compete in the lightweight freestyle-freeride category at similar price points.
