Overview

The Foil Drive External Antenna is a passive signal-boosting accessory designed for riders using Foil Drive electric assist systems on carbon-construction boards. Manufactured by Foil Drive, this antenna addresses a specific challenge: full-carbon foil tracks and heavy carbon layups can interfere with the wireless signal between the handheld controller and the electronics box. The External Antenna bypasses the board entirely by routing a thin cable from a 2 mm plate installed beneath the electronics box to a small antenna pad mounted on the deck, keeping signal reception above the waterline and unobstructed by carbon shielding.

The product is available in four variants that pair a system type — Assist Max or Fusion — with a cable length of either 130 cm (51 in) or 180 cm (71 in). The two cable lengths let riders position the deck-mounted antenna pad where it best suits their board layout and stance.

Who It's For

This antenna is aimed at riders whose boards use full-carbon foil track inserts laminated into a carbon layup. On these builds, the carbon structure can attenuate the wireless signal enough to cause intermittent dropouts between the controller and the drive unit. Riders on boards with lighter glass or mixed constructions will generally find the built-in antenna in the Gen 2 or Fusion electronics box sufficient and may not need this upgrade.

Because the antenna is entirely passive — it requires no wiring to the electronics box and draws no power — it can be installed once and left on the board permanently, even during sessions where the Foil Drive system is removed. That makes it practical for riders who rotate between powered and unpowered sessions on the same board. Installation does add 2 mm of thickness beneath the electronics box, so boards with standard or deep tracks may require longer mast-plate bolts (85 mm for the Assist Max, 65 mm for the Assist Slim).

In the Lineup

Within Foil Drive's accessory catalog, the External Antenna sits alongside other connectivity and maintenance parts rather than the core drive kits. It is a purpose-built solution that complements the Assist Max and Fusion complete kits — Foil Drive's two current tiers of electric foil-assist hardware. The Assist Max is the brand's established Gen 2 system, while the Fusion represents the newer Gen 2.5 platform with additional features. Riders shopping for the antenna are typically already invested in one of these ecosystems and looking to resolve signal reliability on a specific board.

There is no direct competitor equivalent from other electric foil-assist brands; the External Antenna is proprietary to Foil Drive's controller-communication architecture. For riders still evaluating whether they need it, Foil Drive recommends consulting their controller signal connectivity guide before purchasing.
