Overview

The Foil Drive External Antenna is a passive signal-boosting accessory designed by Foil Drive for riders using Gen2 Assist MAX, Assist Slim, or Gen 2.5 Fusion systems on full-carbon construction boards. Carbon fiber foil tracks and carbon layups can interfere with the 2.4 GHz wireless signal between the handheld controller and the Foil Drive unit mounted beneath the board. This external antenna bypasses the board entirely, routing signal through a thin cable to a dedicated antenna pad mounted on the deck surface. Foil Drive notes that the underlying signal technology was developed in collaboration with a specialist engineering team experienced in wireless communications for high-reliability industrial environments.

The antenna itself is entirely passive — it draws no power and has no electronic connection to the Foil Drive electronics box. It ships in two cable-length variants, 130 cm and 180 cm, to accommodate different board sizes and cable-routing preferences. Each kit includes foam spacers to compensate for the added 2 mm of plate thickness beneath the electronics box.

  • May require: Longer mast-plate bolts (85 mm for Assist MAX, 65 mm for Assist Slim) on boards with standard or deep tracks

Who It's For

This accessory targets a specific subset of Foil Drive users: those riding boards with full-carbon foil tracks laminated into carbon-construction decks. On boards with plastic or fiberglass tracks, the Gen2 unit's built-in antenna typically provides reliable connectivity without any add-on. Foil Drive states that the standard antenna works well for the vast majority of setups, and their support documentation indicates that connectivity issues affect a small percentage of Gen2 users — primarily on certain high-performance carbon boards such as models from Armstrong, Takuma, and Takoon, among others.

If you're experiencing intermittent controller dropouts or signal loss on a carbon board, the External Antenna is the brand's recommended permanent fix. Foil Drive suggests watching their controller-connectivity troubleshooting guide before purchasing, since not every carbon board requires the upgrade. Riders on fiberglass or mixed-construction boards generally do not need this accessory.

In the Lineup

Within Foil Drive's accessory catalog, the External Antenna sits alongside other connectivity and mounting hardware such as the Deck Mount for External Antenna, longer mast-plate bolt kits, and various nose-cone options. It was introduced after the Gen2 platform launched, as a targeted solution once the carbon-board signal issue was identified in the field.

The two cable-length variants — 130 cm and 180 cm — are priced identically and differ only in routing reach. The 130 cm length suits most compact prone and wing boards, while the 180 cm option provides extra cable for larger downwind or SUP-style foil boards where the electronics box sits farther from the nose. For riders who already own the antenna and want a cleaner top-deck mounting solution, Foil Drive also sells the Deck Mount for External Antenna as a separate add-on.
