Overview

The Foil Drive MAX Battery is the dedicated power source for the Foil Drive Assist MAX electric foil-assist system, available in three capacity tiers: MAX Sport, MAX Power, and MAX High Power. Manufactured by Foil Drive, an Australian company specializing in electric foil-assist technology, these lithium batteries operate on a 40V (39.6V nominal) platform and share the same IP68-rated, sealed housing designed for repeated saltwater submersion. Each variant slots into one of two nose cone sizes — the Sport uses the shorter Type B cone, while the Power and High Power share the longer Type A cone — so riders can swap between capacity levels without altering the rest of their Assist MAX installation.

All three batteries are exclusively compatible with the Foil Drive Assist MAX system and charge via the Foil Drive 40V Charger or 40V Fast Charger. Each unit ships with a protective lipo bag and a power-plug dust cap.

Who It's For

The three-tier lineup lets riders match battery weight and runtime to their skill level and session demands. The MAX Sport, at just 1.85 kg, is aimed at experienced prone foilers and wing foilers who ride close to shore and prioritize a lighter board feel over extended runtime. Its roughly 30-minute runtime suits riders who need only brief motor assists for takeoffs or connecting swells and who value reduced nose weight during pumping and maneuvering.

The MAX Power sits in the middle at 2.65 kg and approximately 45 minutes of runtime, making it the most common starting point for riders who need to motor out to a break or want longer sessions without swapping batteries. The MAX High Power pushes capacity to 594 Wh — roughly 60 minutes of assisted riding — while adding only about 150 g over the Power. It also unlocks the full 28% Boost Mode on compatible remotes, delivering extra torque for heavier riders or lighter-wind conditions. Riders who cannot easily return to shore for a battery swap, or who want maximum thrust on tap, will benefit most from the High Power option.

In the Lineup

Within Foil Drive's product ecosystem, these batteries sit alongside the Assist MAX motor, controller, and remote as core system components. They replace the older Assist PLUS battery platform, which used a mix of 28V and 40V cells in smaller capacities (the Standard PLUS topped out at 362 Wh). The move to a unified 40V architecture across all three MAX batteries ensures consistent peak thrust even as charge level drops — an improvement over the earlier 28V cells, which lost performance sooner during a session.

In the broader electric foil-assist market, Foil Drive's closest competitor is the Takuma Efoil Assist system, though Takuma integrates its battery into a full pod rather than offering swappable capacity tiers. The modular three-battery approach gives Foil Drive users flexibility that most competing systems lack, letting a single Assist MAX setup serve light-and-fast prone sessions one day and long-distance downwind runs the next.
