Overview

The 2023 Ion Rave Wing Foil Harness is a soft-shell waist harness built specifically for wing foiling. Produced by ION, a German brand with deep roots in windsurf and kitesurf accessories, the Rave sits in the middle of ION's dedicated wingfoil harness range. It uses a fully molded EVA shell that resists water absorption, keeping the harness light even after extended time on the water. A movable hook mounted on bungees slides roughly four inches side to side along the spreader bar, which helps with toe-side comfort and allows the hook to auto-center during normal riding. That sliding mechanism also makes paddling out and riding switch more practical, since the hook can shift out of the way when it isn't under load.

The closure system uses a PVC buckle with smooth 25 mm webbing for quick entry and exit. A leash D-ring sits next to the spreader bar for attaching a wing safety leash, and a coated leash line runs across the back of the harness in a layout similar to kite handlepass systems.

Who It's For

The Rave is aimed at intermediate to advanced wing foilers who want harness support without the rigidity of a hard-shell design. Its soft EVA construction conforms to a range of body shapes, making it a practical choice for riders who find stiffer harnesses uncomfortable or restrictive. The sliding hook suits freeriders who regularly ride switch or change stance often, since it moves with the rider rather than locking into a fixed position.

Because it transfers wing load from the forearms to the waist, the Rave is especially useful during longer freeride sessions or in moderate wind where sustained pumping and holding the wing can fatigue the arms. It is less oriented toward high-power or high-speed disciplines where maximum lumbar support from a rigid shell would be preferred. Riders transitioning from unharnessed wing foiling to their first harness will find the lightweight feel and simple buckle closure easy to adopt.

In the Lineup

ION offers three wingfoil-specific waist harnesses. The Rogue sits at the stiff end with full CURV construction and a flex index of 14/20, built for riders who want firm back support. The Arc occupies the opposite extreme at a flex index of 2/20, prioritizing the softest possible feel. The Rave lands between the two at 4/20 — still a soft-shell harness, but with more structure than the Arc thanks to its molded EVA backplate. At a retail price around USD 180, the Rave is positioned as ION's mid-range wingfoil harness option.

For buyers cross-shopping other brands, the Mystic Foil Harness and Ride Engine Sling Wing Harness occupy a similar niche — lightweight, soft-shell waist harnesses designed for wing foiling. The Rave's sliding hook and sub-700 g weight keep it competitive in that group.
