Overview

The 2023 ION Rave Wing Waist Harness is a soft-shell waist harness built specifically for wing foiling. Produced by ION, a German brand with deep roots in windsports protection and accessories, the Rave sits alongside the hard-shell Rogue as one of two purpose-built wing foil harnesses in the ION lineup. Where the Rogue uses a rigid Curv composite shell, the Rave takes a different approach with a fully molded EVA construction that prioritizes comfort and flexibility. The harness is designed to offload arm fatigue by transferring wing pull to the rider's waist, extending session length without the bulk of traditional windsurf or kite harnesses.

ION developed the Rave around a non-water-absorbent EVA shell with interior EVA padding that conforms to the rider's torso. A sliding hook mounted on bungee cord allows roughly four inches of lateral travel, which helps maintain comfort during toe-side riding and makes switch-stance transitions smoother. Entry and exit use PVC buckle closures with flat webbing straps, and a PU tube spans the rear of the harness horizontally, providing a convenient attachment point for a board leash.

Who It's For

The Rave is oriented toward intermediate to advanced wing foilers who spend time in freeride and wave-oriented conditions rather than purely high-powered flat-water blasting. Its soft-shell build is notably less fit-sensitive than a hard-shell harness, making it a practical choice for riders whose body shape doesn't conform neatly to rigid molded designs. If you've found stiff kite or windsurf harnesses uncomfortable, the Rave's flexible EVA construction is worth considering.

At 700 grams, the harness stays unobtrusive during unhooked riding, paddling out, or transitions. Riders who want forearm relief on longer sessions — particularly in moderate wind where constant sheeting pressure builds fatigue — will get the most benefit. It is not aimed at beginners who haven't yet developed a consistent hook-in technique, since effective use assumes the rider is already comfortable on foil and managing wing power through a harness line.

In the Lineup

Within ION's wing foil harness range, the Rave is the soft-shell option positioned as the more comfort-focused and forgiving alternative to the Rogue. The Rogue uses a fully rigid Curv composite shell that delivers more direct power transfer and back support, suiting riders in powered-up conditions who prefer a locked-in feel. The Rave trades some of that rigidity for a more relaxed fit and greater flexibility, which can feel more natural in lighter wind or wave riding where body movement is constant.

For riders cross-shopping across brands, the Rave competes in a similar space to the Mystic Foil Harness and the Ride Engine Sling Wing harness — lightweight, wing-specific waist harnesses in the mid-price tier. At $169.99, the Rave undercuts several hard-shell competitors while offering a distinct soft-shell design philosophy that prioritizes wearability over maximum stiffness.
