Overview

The Ion Surf Shield Tights Short is a cut-resistant protective garment from ION's 2026 Surf Shield line, designed specifically for watersport athletes who ride around sharp fins, foils, and reef. Part of a dedicated protection range that ION developed for wing foiling, kiteboarding, and surfing, these short tights use HPPE (High-Performance Polyethylene) fabric — the same material found in ballistic vests, climbing ropes, and firefighter uniforms — to deliver serious cut resistance in a lightweight, low-profile package.

The design is unisex with a snug, second-skin fit intended to work as a layering piece under boardshorts or on its own. A neoprene waistband with adjustable laces keeps the tights in place during sessions, while a small amount of neoprene in the upper section adds light insulation for cooler conditions. ION's Slip_Loop system lets riders connect the tights to a Surf Shield rashguard or wetshirt, preventing the top from riding up during activity.

Who It's For

The Surf Shield Tights Short suit any rider who wants cut protection without the bulk or warmth of a full wetsuit. Wing foilers and kiteboarders face regular contact risk with sharp carbon foil edges, and these tights address that concern with EN388-certified protection while staying thin enough to layer comfortably. The UPF 50+ rating also makes them practical for warm-water sessions where sun exposure is a factor but thermal insulation is not a priority.

Skill level is largely irrelevant here — beginners may appreciate the added confidence around foil gear, while experienced riders who push harder and fall more often around equipment benefit from reliable cut resistance. The short length covers the thighs, the area most exposed to foil strikes during crashes, while leaving the lower legs free for unrestricted movement and minimal drag.

In the Lineup

The Tights Short sits within ION's five-piece Surf Shield collection for 2026, which also includes a rashguard longsleeve, wetshirt longsleeve, boardshorts (20"), and tights long. Riders looking for full-leg coverage can step up to the Surf Shield Tights Long, which uses the same HPPE construction but extends to the ankles at a higher price point. The Surf Shield Boardshorts 20" offer a more casual silhouette with a zippered back pocket, though they share the same Level 4 cut protection and HPPE fabric.

In the broader market, cut-resistant watersport garments remain a relatively small category. Slyde Handboards and a few wetsuit brands have explored protective panels, but ION's Surf Shield line is among the few purpose-built ranges offering EN388-certified cut protection across multiple garment types. For riders already in ION's ecosystem of harnesses and wetsuits, the Surf Shield pieces integrate as a natural addition to their kit.
