Overview

The LiP Typhoon Sunglasses are purpose-built watersports eyewear from LiP, a brand that launched with this very model as its flagship design. The Typhoon is engineered to handle the demands of kitesurfing, wing foiling, surfing, and other ocean-based activities where glare reduction, secure retention, and fog resistance all matter. The frame uses Grilamid TR90 thermoplastic nylon in a dual-injected construction — a material chosen for its combination of low weight, flexibility, and impact resistance. Lens options span ZEISS decentered polarized nylon lenses and NXT Photochromic lenses under LiP's ecLiPse label, letting riders choose between fixed tint polarization or light-adaptive photochromic performance.

A patented anti-fogging system is central to the Typhoon's design. Precision cuts in the lenses and venting channels molded into the upper and lower frame edges encourage continuous airflow behind the lenses, counteracting the moisture buildup that plagues conventional sunglasses during high-exertion water sessions. Overmolded TPU rubber lines the inside of the frame and temples for a soft, pressure-free fit, while TPE extensions along the inner frame edges seal against the eye socket to block peripheral water spray and stray light.

Who It's For

The Typhoon suits intermediate to advanced watersports riders who spend extended sessions on the water and need eyewear that stays put through wipeouts and spray. The 8-base wrap geometry provides wide peripheral coverage against direct and reflected UV, making it particularly relevant for riders in high-glare marine environments — open-ocean kitesurfing, downwind wing foiling, and surf sessions in tropical or high-latitude conditions where reflected light off the water is intense.

The FAILSAFE retention system — combining an adjustable rear strap with drawstring tension and a silicone necklace failsafe — is designed so the glasses stay connected even through heavy impacts. Riders who have lost conventional sunglasses to wipeouts will find this dual-retention approach practical. The photochromic NXT lens option is worth noting for riders who session across changing light conditions and prefer not to swap lenses mid-day.

In the Lineup

The Typhoon is LiP's original and flagship model, sitting at the top of their watersports eyewear range. LiP also produces the Surge, a slightly different silhouette that shares much of the same lens and retention technology but offers an alternative fit profile. A prescription-ready variant, the Typhoon RX, is available for riders who need corrective lenses. The standard Typhoon ships in a wide array of frame and lens combinations — Gloss White, Gloss Black, and Matt Black frames paired with options ranging from Smoke Black and Gun Blue to Rose Gold and the photochromic ecLiPse series.

At its price point, the Typhoon competes with other retention-focused watersports sunglasses. Its ZEISS lens partnership and patented ventilation system distinguish it within the category, and the breadth of lens tint options gives buyers flexibility to match lens performance to their typical conditions.
