Overview

The Manera Vagabond Vest is an impact vest built specifically for wing foiling and downwind paddling, where riders regularly venture away from shore and need both protection and preparedness. Manera designed it around a "Ready to Escape" concept, integrating survival tools directly into a slim, wearable vest rather than asking riders to carry separate safety gear. The result is a purpose-built piece of equipment that sits at the intersection of impact protection and offshore self-rescue readiness.

Unlike traditional impact vests focused purely on crash absorption, the Vagabond adds practical storage and emergency signaling features aimed at riders covering distance in open water. It ships with an individual PLASTIMO flashlight and whistle, reflective prints for visibility, and leash attachment points for securing accessories such as a VHF radio, phone case, or cap. Two front pockets with Airprene drainage panels provide room for tools, nutrition, or a phone during extended sessions.

Who It's For

The Vagabond targets intermediate to advanced wing foilers and downwind riders who leave the safety of the shoreline. If your sessions involve open-ocean crossings, remote launches, or long downwinders where self-rescue is a real consideration, this vest addresses that use case directly. The cut-resistant jersey is a practical addition for foil riders, where contact with a sharp carbon foil wing or a taut kite line poses a genuine injury risk.

Because the 15 mm foam layer is relatively thin, the vest prioritizes mobility over maximum crash protection. Riders who want heavy-duty impact absorption for aggressive kite loops or big-air sessions may find the padding minimal. The Vagabond is tuned more for distance-oriented disciplines where freedom of movement, low bulk, and access to safety tools matter more than absorbing heavy impacts.

In the Lineup

Within Manera's current protection range, the Vagabond sits alongside the React vest and the newer Open Sea vest. The React shares the same 15 mm foam thickness but follows a more conventional impact-vest template — strategic torso and back padding with a harness-compatible cutout and no integrated survival tools. The Open Sea is another recent addition targeting open-water conditions. For riders who prioritize raw impact protection during kiteboarding, Manera's Boom vest uses thicker SHOTGUM foam and X10D neoprene construction, placing it in a different category altogether.

The Vagabond doesn't have a direct one-to-one competitor from most other brands, as few impact vests bundle signaling devices and cut-resistant fabric into a single garment. Riders have historically assembled their own offshore safety kits from separate components — the Vagabond consolidates those into one vest, which is its primary differentiator in the market.
