Overview

The 2025 North Sonar Prime Edition is a complete, ready-to-ride hydrofoil package from North Action Sports, built around the brand's modular Sonar foil platform. It pairs the MAv2 Prime mid-aspect front wing with an aluminium mast, alloy fuselage, and freeride stabilizer — all in a single box with tools, hardware, and a padded travel bag. The Prime Edition uses pre-preg E-glass construction for its front wings rather than the carbon pre-preg found in North's CF Edition, bringing the price down while retaining the same wing molds and foil profiles. Five front-wing sizes (1200, 1500, 1850, 2100, and 2400 cm²) let buyers choose the surface area that matches their weight and riding style.

Who It's For

The Prime Edition is aimed squarely at riders entering foiling for the first time or progressing through the early-intermediate stage. North positions it as a starter kit suitable across multiple disciplines — wing foiling, kite foiling, and tow foiling — so buyers who haven't committed to a single discipline can explore on a single setup. The larger wings in the range (2400 and 2100 cm²) provide pitch stability, early lift, and a low stall speed that help heavier or less-experienced riders get up on foil consistently. The smaller options (1500 and 1200 cm²) suit lighter riders or those ready to trade low-end stability for higher top speed and tighter turning.

Because all Sonar components are cross-compatible, a rider who starts on a Prime Edition front wing can later swap in a carbon MAv2 wing, a longer or shorter mast, or a different stabilizer without replacing the entire setup. That modularity extends the useful life of the initial investment well beyond the beginner phase.

In the Lineup

Within North's 2025 Sonar range, the Prime Edition sits below the CF (Carbon Foil) Edition. Both editions share the same MAv2 wing shapes and the same fuselage and stabilizer options, but the CF Edition upgrades to carbon pre-preg wings and a carbon mast for reduced swing weight and a stiffer, more direct feel. Riders who outgrow the Prime Edition's E-glass wings can step up to the carbon MAv2 wings individually rather than buying a whole new package.

The MA series itself occupies the middle of North's foil-wing lineup — positioned between the more beginner-oriented Reflex series and the higher-aspect HA wings designed for speed-focused or race-oriented riding. Buyers cross-shopping other brands will find the Prime Edition comparable in price and intent to entry-level aluminium-mast packages from brands like F-One (Gravity 2200) and Slingshot (Phantasm), though each brand's wing profile and ride character differ. At USD 1,199 across all five sizes, the North Prime Edition is competitively priced for a complete foil set with bag and accessories included.
