Overview

The North Rear Stabilizer Wing is a carbon tail wing for the Sonar hydrofoil system, sold individually across eleven size options spanning four distinct series. North designs each stabilizer with a thin profile and elevated aspect ratio to pair with its Sonar front wings for kite foiling, wing foiling, surf foiling, and downwind disciplines. Sizes range from 122 cm² up to 320 cm², and each ships with a protective cover and an M8×16 mm screw pack for top-mount installation on Sonar fuselages.

Top-mounting the stabilizer above the fuselage keeps it out of the turbulent wake shed by the front wing, which contributes to a cleaner flow over the tail surface. It also means the stabilizer is the first component to break the water surface during a breach, giving the rider an early tactile signal before the front wing loses lift.

Who It's For

The breadth of the lineup means there is a size for nearly every foiler in the Sonar ecosystem. The Freeride series — S210, S270, and S320 — covers the widest rider range. The S320 pairs with larger front wings and suits newer foilers or anyone prioritizing early lift and pitch stability. The S270 sits in the middle as a cross-discipline option balancing speed and control for intermediate to advanced riders. The S210 is tuned for smaller front wings and higher-speed riding with a more agile feel.

Riders chasing top-end speed graduate to the High Speed series. The S238 offers a flatter profile and higher aspect ratio than the S270, reducing drag while retaining enough area for powered kite and wing sessions on front wings like the MA1200 or larger HA models. The S208 narrows the span further for additional maneuverability, and the S158 V2 targets lighter riders pushing small, fast front wings in the HA550–750 range. The Surf series (S145, S185, S215) features minimal-sweep outlines and upward-curving tips for low-speed grip through turns, pairing with North's SF surf front wings. At the far end, the Glide series S122 is built for intermediate-to-advanced downwind and prone foilers who want maximum glide from wings like the DW690–DW820.

In the Lineup

Within North's Sonar foil platform, the stabilizer is one of three interchangeable components — front wing, fuselage, and tail wing — that riders mix and match around a shared mast. The current stabilizer range has grown from the original Freeride and Speed groupings into four series, reflecting North's expansion into dedicated surf and downwind-glide categories. Compared to competing tail-wing ecosystems such as the Armstrong tail wing range or the Axis rear stabilizers, North's lineup stands out for its number of size increments, giving riders finer tuning steps between sizes rather than larger jumps. Pricing across the eleven options runs from $209 to $239, placing them in the mid-range for premium carbon stabilizers.
