Overview

The North Sonar Freeride MA850v2 is a mid-aspect front wing in North's Sonar foil platform, sitting within the versatile MAv2 series. Built from carbon pre-preg, it carries a wing area of 850 cm² and is designed to balance speed, agility, and glide across multiple foiling disciplines. The MA850v2 falls on the smaller, performance-oriented end of the eight-wing MAv2 lineup, which spans from 700 cm² up to 2400 cm². North positions it as a cross-discipline wing suited for wing foiling, kite foiling, wake foiling, and tow foiling.

The airfoil profile on the MA850v2 prioritizes top-end speed over low-end stall speed. Its planform features minimal sweep through the mid-span with added sweep at the tips, aiming for a mix of efficient forward drive and responsive turning. The front view shows a flat centre section that transitions to anhedral farther along the span, with flattened wingtips — a geometry North uses to reduce ventilation when the tips breach the surface during hard turns.

Who It's For

North describes the MA850v2 as suited for lighter to average-weight advanced wing foilers, prone surf foilers, and kite foilers. With its 850 cm² area and speed-biased profile, it asks riders to maintain momentum — this is not a low-and-slow cruiser. Riders who pump well and want a wing that rewards an active riding style will find it responsive. Its ventilation-resistant tip design supports aggressive, banked turns without losing connection to the water.

The 850 sits in the middle ground of the smaller MAv2 sizes (700–1200), making it a practical choice for riders in the 65–80 kg range who want a single front wing that handles powered freeride runs, freestyle tricks, and small-wave surf foiling without swapping gear. Heavier riders or those looking for more low-end lift would typically step up to the MA1050v2 or MA1200v2.

In the Lineup

Within the MAv2 series, North splits the range into two tiers. The smaller wings (700 through 1200) focus on speed, agility, and low drag once on foil. The larger wings (1500 through 2400) shift toward pitch stability, early takeoff, and lower stall speeds for progression-focused riders. The MA850v2 sits firmly in the performance tier, one step up from the MA700v2 — the most speed-oriented option in the line — and one below the MA1050v2, which adds a bit more lift and forgiveness.

All MAv2 wings from the 700 through the 2100 use the same carbon pre-preg construction, while the 2400 uses a more affordable E-glass pre-preg build. Riders already in the Sonar ecosystem can swap between MAv2 sizes on the same fuselage and mast, making it straightforward to adjust the setup for different wind and wave conditions.
