Overview

The North Sonar Front Surf Wing is the surf-oriented front wing series within North's Sonar foil platform. Designated by the "SF" prefix, the line spans five sizes — SF680, SF830, SF930, SF1080, and SF1230 — each tuned for low-speed efficiency, responsive carving, and easy pumping across prone surfing, wing foiling, wake-thieving, and downwind disciplines. Built from pre-preg carbon with titanium hardware, the SF wings use a medium-high aspect ratio planform with moderate anhedral and a swept outline. The tip area is deliberately reduced to lower the force required for rail-to-rail rolling, while a thicker leading-edge profile section softens sensitivity to angle-of-attack changes and supports a forgiving stall recovery.

Who It's For

The SF series suits a broad skill range, from progressing intermediates stepping into surf-style foiling to experienced riders looking for a dedicated wave and pump wing. The lower stall speed across all sizes means riders can connect sections on smaller, softer waves without needing to generate high board speed, and the forgiving recovery characteristic lets a rider regain momentum in one or two pumps after losing speed.

Smaller sizes like the SF680 and SF830 favor lighter riders or those seeking tighter, more aggressive turns and higher top-end speed. The SF930 sits in the middle as an all-around option, balancing glide, pump efficiency, and maneuverability across a 1-to-5-foot wave range. The SF1080 and SF1230 provide earlier lift and longer glide for heavier riders or lighter wind conditions, making them practical choices for wing foiling sessions when power is marginal.

In the Lineup

Within the North Sonar ecosystem, the SF series sits alongside the MA (mid-aspect, freeride/freestyle) and HA (high-aspect, performance/racing) front wing families. Where the MA wings prioritize versatility and the HA wings target speed and upwind efficiency, the SF line is purpose-shaped for surf-style riding — lower speed range, quicker roll response, and a stall threshold that rewards pumping technique over raw power. North pairs the SF wings with the S215 stabilizer (or S185 for the SF680), which is designed to complement the front wing's low-speed glide characteristics and pitch stability during sustained pumping.

Riders comparing across brands will find the SF series occupying similar territory to the Armstrong CF series or the Axis PNG front wings — medium-high aspect surf foils that balance pump efficiency with carving agility. The SF wings mount to any current Sonar fuselage and mast via North's GeoLock connection system, so existing Sonar owners can add an SF front wing without replacing the rest of their setup.
