Overview

The North Sonar HM Carbon Mast is North's high-performance foil mast built from a blend of High Modulus (HM) and Ultra High Modulus (UHM) prepreg carbon. Sitting above the standard Sonar Carbon mast in North's lineup, the HM variant features a profile that is over 15% thinner in its submerged portion while delivering increased bending and torsional stiffness. North also reduced the chord length along the mast's span — most noticeably toward the lower section — to cut hydrodynamic drag, improve pumping efficiency, and allow tighter, more responsive turns. The trailing-edge shaping was specifically engineered to minimize ventilation across a range of sea states.

The mast is offered in four lengths — 80 cm, 85 cm, 95 cm, and 105 cm — each tuned for a different discipline. It ships with a carbon mast cover and a screw pack, and integrates directly with North's Sonar foil system without additional adapters.

Who It's For

The North Sonar HM Carbon Mast is aimed at intermediate-to-advanced foilers who want a measurable step up in responsiveness and glide from their mast. The sportier, stiffer feel rewards riders who are already comfortable on foil and looking to refine their technique — tighter carves, more efficient pump strokes, and cleaner upwind angles. Less experienced riders may find the heightened feedback demanding compared to the standard Sonar Carbon mast.

Each length targets a specific use case. The 80 cm suits prone surf foiling, downwind paddling, and pump foiling, where a short, low-drag mast keeps the rider high on the foil with minimal submerged area. The 85 cm is positioned as an all-discipline option with a particular emphasis on wing foiling. The 95 cm adds versatility for riders who want extra clearance in chop or swell. The 105 cm is optimized for kite foiling and racing — its submerged section is a further 1 mm thinner than the 80 and 85 cm versions, prioritizing top-end speed and upwind efficiency.

In the Lineup

Within North's Sonar foil platform, the HM Carbon Mast sits one tier above the standard Sonar Carbon (CF) mast. Both share the same mounting interface and compatibility with Sonar fuselages and wings, but the HM version uses higher-grade carbon and a thinner, narrower profile for reduced drag and increased stiffness. Riders stepping up from the CF mast can expect a noticeably crisper ride, especially in turns and transitions.

In the broader market, the North Sonar HM competes with other premium carbon foil masts such as the Armstrong A+ Ultra Mast and the Axis Ultra High Modulus mast. All three target performance-oriented foilers willing to invest in stiffer, lighter construction for incremental gains in speed and efficiency. The North option's four-length spread — from 80 cm through 105 cm — gives it broad discipline coverage within a single product line.
