Overview
The North Sonar Prime Edition is a complete hydrofoil package from North's modular Sonar foil system, aimed at riders entering the sport or building foundational skills across wing foiling, kite foiling, SUP foiling, and prone surf foiling. The kit pairs a mid-aspect front wing from the MA v2 series with an aluminium mast, aluminium fuselage, freeride stabilizer, and board adaptor — everything needed to mount to a foilboard and get on the water. North uses pre-preg e-glass construction for the Prime Edition front wings, molded on the same tooling as the carbon pre-preg versions in the higher-tier Carbon Edition. The result is a kit that shares the same wing profiles and hydrodynamic shapes as North's carbon lineup but at a lower price point, with the trade-off being slightly more weight from the e-glass and aluminium components.
The Prime Edition ships with a padded 600D travel bag that has individual compartments for each component, plus SS316 stainless steel hardware, a Torx T40 tool, and marine grease — so no additional purchases are needed for assembly.

Who It's For
The Prime Edition targets beginner to intermediate foilers who want a reliable platform for learning and early progression. The mid-aspect wing shape provides a balance between lift at low speeds and manageable top-end stability, which suits riders still developing board starts, stance, and basic carving. The longer A700 fuselage delays the pitching moment compared to shorter race-oriented fuselages, giving newer riders more time to react to changes in pitch — a meaningful advantage during early sessions when reflexes are still forming.
Within the three sizes offered at this retailer, the PE 2100 provides the most lift at the lowest speeds, making it the natural pick for heavier riders or lighter wind areas. The PE 1500 sits in the middle as a versatile option for average-weight riders in moderate conditions. The PE 1200 suits lighter riders or those progressing toward higher speeds and tighter turns. Because the Sonar system is fully modular, riders can later swap individual components — upgrading to a carbon mast or switching wing sizes — without replacing the entire setup.
In the Lineup
The Prime Edition sits as North's entry-level complete foil package within the Sonar system. One step up is the Sonar Carbon Edition, which substitutes a carbon pre-preg mast (the CF85 or CF72), a carbon fuselage, and the S270 carbon stabilizer for reduced swing weight and a stiffer, more direct ride feel. Both editions use the same MA v2 wing profiles, so the performance difference comes down to mast and component materials rather than wing shape. Riders who start on the Prime Edition can upgrade to carbon components individually over time through North's modular platform.
For buyers comparing across brands, the Prime Edition competes with other aluminium-mast starter foil packages in a similar price range, such as entry-level kits from F-One and Slingshot that also pair e-glass or fibreglass wings with aluminium hardware. North's main differentiator is the breadth of its modular ecosystem — the same 165 × 90 mm mounting standard and interchangeable parts carry through from beginner to advanced setups.
