Overview

The North Sonar S-Series Stabilizers are pre-preg carbon rear wings designed for North's modular Sonar foil system. North organizes this stabilizer range into distinct performance categories — Freeride, Speed (High Speed), and Surf — so riders can fine-tune the balance between stability, drag, and maneuverability by swapping a single component. All S-Series stabilizers mount on top of the fuselage rather than below it, a design choice that keeps the rear wing out of the front wing's turbulent wake and gives riders an early breach warning when the stabilizer tip breaks the surface before the main wing lifts too high.

The lineup covered here spans six sizes: the S178 and S208 Speed in the high-speed category, the S185 in the surf category, and the S210 and S270 in the freeride category. Each stabilizer ships with a protective cover and a stainless-steel screw pack (M8×16 mm) for mounting.

  • S185: 185 cm² area, 200 g, Surf series
  • S208 / S208 Speed: 208 cm² area, 220 g, High Speed series
  • S210: 210 cm² area, 220 g, Freeride series
  • S270: 270 cm² area, 280 g, Freeride series
  • Construction (all sizes): Pre-preg carbon with thin profile section
  • Mounting: Top-mount on Sonar fuselage

Who It's For

Rider skill level and discipline dictate which stabilizer makes sense. The S270 sits at the accessible end of the range, offering balanced lift and control across kite, wing, and surf foiling — a solid starting point for intermediate riders who want a single rear wing that handles a variety of conditions. The S210 pairs with smaller front wings when a rider is ready to push speed and seek a more responsive, agile ride.

The S208 Speed and S178 cater to experienced foilers chasing reduced drag and looser handling. Both use a higher aspect ratio and flatter rondure (the wing's curvature viewed from the front) compared to their freeride counterparts, which translates to less induced drag and quicker directional changes at speed. North recommends pairing the S178 with front wings of HA950 or smaller. The S185, meanwhile, is purpose-shaped for surf foiling alongside the SF-series front wings, with upward-curving tips for directional grip in turns and a minimal-sweep outline that supports low-speed pumping.

In the Lineup

Within the broader Sonar stabilizer catalog, the sizes listed here cover the core of North's offering. Larger options like the S320 sit above the S270 for riders pairing with big front wings who need maximum early planing and stability, while smaller, higher-aspect models like the S238 and the glide-oriented S142 and S122 extend the range for downwind and pump specialists. All Sonar stabilizers share the same fuselage interface, so moving between sizes is a matter of unbolting one wing and attaching another — no adapter or shim required, though North does sell a separate Stabilizer Shim Kit for fine-tuning angle of attack. Riders cross-shopping other brands will find a similar modular rear-wing approach in systems like the Armstrong and Axis stabilizer ranges, though direct cross-brand mounting compatibility does not apply.
