Overview

The North Sonar SF-Series Front Wings are a line of high-aspect-ratio foil wings built for surf-oriented disciplines including prone foiling, wing surfing, downwinding, and wake-thieving. Produced by North Action Sports under their Sonar foil platform, the SF-Series spans five sizes — SF680, SF830, SF930, SF1080, and SF1230 — covering a wide range of rider weights and conditions. Each wing uses pre-preg carbon construction with titanium hardware, and the line shares a common design language centered on low stall speeds, efficient pumping, and carve-focused handling.

The SF-Series profile features increased thickness and curvature toward the leading edge, which reduces sensitivity to pitch changes and helps the wing maintain lift at lower speeds despite the relatively high aspect ratios. Reduced tip area across all sizes lowers the force required to initiate roll, contributing to quick, responsive transitions from rail to rail. North keeps the wingspan similar across sizes so the ride character stays consistent whether you're on the smallest or largest option in the range.

Who It's For

The SF-Series targets intermediate to advanced foilers who prioritize surf-style performance — tight carves, efficient pumping between sections, and the ability to generate lift from small, weak waves. The larger sizes (SF1080 and SF1230) suit heavier riders or those foiling in lighter wind and smaller swell, where early lift and sustained glide matter most. The mid-range SF930 works as a versatile option across prone surfing, winging, and downwind runs in waist- to head-high conditions, while the SF830 and SF680 reward riders who want quicker maneuverability and are comfortable sacrificing some low-end lift for a more responsive feel.

Riders moving from freeride-oriented foils toward a dedicated surf setup will find the SF-Series forgiving enough to bridge that gap. The low stall speeds let you recover from stalled turns or missed bumps with just one or two pumps, which is useful for progressing into tighter, more committed surfing on foil.

In the Lineup

Within North's Sonar front wing range, the SF-Series sits alongside the Glide Series (optimized for freeride and cruising at moderate speeds) and the Performance Series (built for higher-speed riding and racing). The SF line occupies the low-speed, high-lift end of the spectrum. The SF830 and SF680 are newer additions that extended the range toward smaller, higher-aspect-ratio options, complementing the original SF930, SF1080, and SF1230 sizes.

For buyers cross-shopping other brands, the SF-Series competes with surf-focused front wings like the Armstrong CF-Series and Axis PNG in similar area classes. Compared to those alternatives, the North SF wings lean toward consistent span across sizes and a pronounced emphasis on low-speed pumping efficiency rather than top-end speed. Riders already invested in North's Sonar fuselage and mast ecosystem can mix SF wings with compatible stabilizers from the Surf or Glide lines to tune the setup for different conditions.
