Overview

The Oakley WTR Icon Surf Helmet is Oakley's first purpose-built surf helmet, developed in collaboration with team athletes Griffin Colapinto and Caity Simmers. Initially released in limited quantities in late 2024 and reaching wider availability in early 2025, the WTR Icon targets surfers, foilers, and other watersports riders who want head protection without sacrificing comfort or performance in the water. Oakley designed the helmet around reducing the sensory trade-offs — restricted hearing, added drag, poor drainage — that have historically kept surfers from wearing helmets in heavy conditions.

The shell is built from ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene), paired with D3O impact-absorbing material on the interior to manage energy dispersion on contact. An open-ventilation layout allows water to drain immediately after duck dives or wipeouts, while a shaped brim channels water away from the forehead and eyes. The Oakley 360 Fit System and a three-position adjustable yoke let riders dial in a secure fit around the occipital area, and the ear protection is both adjustable and fully removable.

Who It's For

The WTR Icon is aimed at intermediate to advanced surfers who ride consequential waves and want reliable head protection — think reef breaks, slabs, and crowded lineups where board-to-head contact is a real risk. It also fits squarely into the foiling safety category: wing foilers, prone foilers, and kitefoilers face similar impact hazards from hydrofoil components, and the helmet's low weight and drainage design suit those disciplines well.

Riders who have avoided helmets because of drag, muffled hearing, or a waterlogged fit are the core audience. The removable ear covers let users choose between full coverage and an open-ear configuration depending on conditions, and at under 365 grams the helmet sits near the lighter end of the watersports-helmet spectrum.

In the Lineup

The WTR Icon is currently the sole helmet in Oakley's surf lineup, representing the brand's entry into head protection for wave riding and foiling. It sits at a premium price point relative to established watersports helmets such as the Gath SFC and the Sandbox Classic 2.0 Low Rider, both of which have been staples in surf and kite helmets for years. Where those options use softer-shell or hybrid constructions, Oakley differentiates with the hard ABS shell, D3O liner, and the Virginia Tech four-star safety rating — a testing protocol more commonly associated with cycling and snow helmets. For riders who prioritize verified impact performance and are willing to pay a premium for it, the WTR Icon occupies a distinct position in the current watersports-helmet market.
