Overview

The Ride Engine Free Float Wingsurf Chest Harness is a chest-mounted harness built specifically for wing foiling. Rather than sitting at the waist like a traditional harness, the Free Float positions its hook higher on the torso using a 4-point suspension cradle system. Ride Engine developed the concept by drawing on classic windsurfing chest harness designs, tactical backpack load-distribution principles, and the stability systems found in endurance running and moto hydration packs. The result is a harness that keeps the arms and torso free for unrestricted movement while shifting the harness line connection point upward.

By elevating the hook, the Free Float reduces the length of harness line needed, which in turn cuts down on harness line slap and unintentional hooking during transitions or while paddling out through shore break. Moving the hook off the waist also leaves that area open for attaching a wing leash or board leash without interference.

Key Specs

  • Closure system: 4-point hook-and-loop with perforated EVA back and chest panels
  • Hook: The Nug — removable, universal harness line hook (opens with a standard fin key)
  • Hydration: Integrated hydration bladder
  • Storage: Internal compartment for phone, snacks, or cards
  • Available sizes: S, M, L

Who It's For

The Free Float targets wing foilers who want full upper-body freedom and prefer not to have a bulky waist harness competing for space with leashes and impact vests. Riders who frequently paddle out to reach the wind line or navigate shore break before hooking in may appreciate the higher hook position, which stays out of the way during those transitions. The removable Nug hook also makes the harness useful for downwind SUP or foil-assisted downwind runs, where a rider may want hydration and storage without needing a hook at all.

Ride Engine tested the Free Float with both men and women across a range of conditions — from Maui and Fiji to Hood River, Oregon — suggesting it is sized and shaped to fit a broad range of body types. It suits intermediate to advanced wing foilers who are comfortable managing their own harness line setup and want a streamlined alternative to waist-style options.

In the Lineup

Within Ride Engine's wing foil harness range, the Free Float sits alongside waist-style models like the Bati, Vinaka, and Vinaka Pro. Those waist harnesses use Ride Engine's Curv composite hard-shell technology and traditional waist-wrap designs, making them more familiar to riders coming from kiteboarding. The Free Float occupies a distinct niche as the brand's chest-mount option, offering a fundamentally different load path and wearing experience. Ride Engine also offers an Offshore Pack for riders who want a chest-based system with additional storage capacity.

In the broader market, chest harnesses for wing foiling remain uncommon. Most competing brands — including Mystic, Dakine, and ION — focus on waist harnesses adapted from their kite lines. The Free Float is one of the few purpose-built chest harness options designed from the ground up for wing foiling, which gives it a unique position for riders specifically seeking that configuration.
