Overview
The SUNOVA x Foil Drive Foilboard is a purpose-built prone foilboard developed in collaboration between Sunova Surfboards and Foil Drive, engineered specifically for use with the Foil Drive Gen 2 motorized assist system. Sunova, a Thailand-based board manufacturer known for sustainable construction methods, worked directly with the Foil Drive team to shape and test this board around the demands of electric-assist foiling. Built using Sunova's TR3Tec construction — a layup combining a lightweight EPS core, parabolic carbon fiber rail, sustainably sourced Paulownia wood sandwich, fiberglass, and bio epoxy resin — the board balances durability and low weight across all four available sizes.
The shape uses a pulled-in nose and tail with a parallel midsection, designed to maximize planing surface while allowing harder carves without catching a rail. A flat rocker profile with subtle nose and tail kick helps the board get onto plane quickly under motor assist, while a concave deck brings the rider's stance closer to the foil. The bottom contour transitions from a subtle rounded vee into a flat midsection, providing stability on touchdown and an efficient gliding surface once on foil.

Who It's For
Sunova positions this board for a wide skill range, from novice riders getting into foiling for the first time to experienced foilers looking for a dedicated Foil Drive platform. The smallest 39 L size suits lighter or more advanced riders comfortable with minimal volume, while the 62 L option provides enough float for heavier riders or those still building confidence with water starts. Because the Foil Drive system handles the propulsion needed to get on foil, this board works in conditions where waves or wind alone wouldn't be enough — flat water, light wind days, or small swell sessions that would otherwise leave a prone foiler waiting on the beach.
The flat rocker profile that makes this board efficient under motor assist is less suited to steep, hollow wave takeoffs. Riders primarily focused on wave-riding performance in overhead surf will want a more rockered prone foil shape. This board is tuned for the rider who values time on foil over wave selection.
In the Lineup
Within Sunova's foil range, the Foil Drive board sits alongside the Pilot (a prone surf foilboard) and the Carver and Aviator models for wing and downwind foiling. Where the Pilot is shaped for unassisted wave-powered prone foiling with more rocker, the Foil Drive board trades wave performance for flat-water efficiency under electric assist. Sunova has since introduced the Foil Drive Trench, a newer model in the same Foil Drive collaboration line, giving buyers a second option within the assisted-foiling category.
In the broader market, the SUNOVA x Foil Drive competes with other Foil Drive-approved boards. Its TR3Tec construction keeps the price at a mid-range point for foilboards, and the verified weights — ranging from 3.38 kg to 4.36 kg — place it among the lighter options available for electric-assist foiling.
