Overview

The Unifoil 800 Progression Mast is a high-stiffness carbon mast designed for prone foiling, tow foiling, and downwind riding. Produced by Unifoil, a New Zealand-based hydrofoil brand, the Progression mast sits in the middle of their carbon mast range—stiffer than the earlier Katana design and preceding the speed-oriented Torque mast. At 800mm in length, it targets riders who want maximum rigidity and responsive feedback from their foil setup without sacrificing control during critical maneuvers.

The mast features a redesigned baseplate with bolt holes set closer together, allowing riders to position the mast further forward in their board's track system—approximately 1.2 inches of additional forward placement compared to the Katana baseplate. The baseplate connection is also tapered to reduce drag during takeoffs and touchdowns when the mast breaks the water surface.

Who It's For

The Progression 800 mast suits intermediate to advanced foilers who ride prone, tow-in, or downwind conditions and prioritize stiffness over outright speed. Riders who have outgrown a standard carbon or aluminum mast and find excessive flex limiting their ability to fly high on the mast will benefit from the Progression's rigidity. The stiffer construction allows riders to maintain height on the foil for longer, reducing wetted surface area and improving pumping efficiency.

The 800mm length is well-suited to prone and downwind disciplines where moderate mast height provides a balance of stability and clearance. Riders pairing large front wings with their setup—where mast flex becomes more pronounced—will find the thicker chord profile of the Progression mast helps maintain control through turns and in powered conditions.

In the Lineup

Within Unifoil's mast range, the Progression slots between the Katana and the Torque. The Katana, which the Progression replaced as Unifoil's stiffness benchmark, uses a blend of high-modulus and intermediate-modulus carbon but has a thinner profile. The Progression achieves greater rigidity by adding approximately 0.8mm of chord thickness at the fuselage connection—a trade-off that introduces slightly more drag but delivers noticeably less flex under load. Above the Progression in the lineup, the Torque mast uses high-modulus carbon with a thinner, speed-optimized profile that matches the Progression's stiffness while reducing drag.

For riders choosing between the two, the Progression offers a more accessible price point and prioritizes raw stiffness, while the Torque targets competitive and speed-focused foilers willing to pay more for aerodynamic efficiency. Riders stepping up from an aluminum Unifoil mast or a non-brand carbon mast will find the Progression a substantial upgrade in response and stability.
