Overview

The Green Hat Surf Bump Cap by Vaikobi is a co-branded version of Vaikobi's Bump Hat Surf, produced exclusively for Green Hat Kiteboarding. Vaikobi, an ocean-performance brand founded in Sydney in 2012, developed the Bump Hat Surf as part of its Impact Protection Series — a line of lightweight headwear built for watersports where a full certified helmet isn't required but head protection is still a priority. The cap is designed and tested to the EN 812 bump-cap standard, meaning it offers measurable resistance to minor impacts such as bumps, cuts, and scrapes without the bulk or weight of a traditional helmet.

Construction centers on a heavy-duty Cordura outer shell paired with a rigid 2 mm moulded inner shell and 6 mm of low-rebound, shock-absorbing 3D foam. The Cordura fabric carries a UV50+ sun-protection rating. Inside, moulded foam channels promote airflow around the head, while a large vented area helps manage heat during high-output sessions. A soft, quick-drying elastic headband lines the interior for comfort on extended outings.

Who It's For

The Bump Hat Surf targets intermediate-to-advanced riders across a range of watersports — kiteboarding, wing foiling, foil surfing, downwinding, and skiff sailing among them. Its chin-strap retention system is specifically aimed at activities where the cap must stay locked on through crashes, duck dives, and high-speed wipeouts; Vaikobi positions the Surf model as the choice for riders who need a secure, active-water fit rather than a casual on-water sun hat.

Because the cap is tested to EN 812 rather than a full helmet certification, it sits in the middle ground between no protection and a hard-shell helmet. That makes it practical for riders who want to guard against foil strikes, board contact, or reef scrapes but find helmets too hot, heavy, or restrictive for their sessions. The curved peak with its black underside is shaped to preserve upward vision — useful for wing and kite riders who spend time looking skyward.

In the Lineup

Within Vaikobi's Impact Protection Series, the Bump Hat Surf sits alongside the Bump Hat Hydro and the Bucket Bump Hat. All three share the same 6 mm foam and 2 mm shell construction, but they differ in fit and closure: the Hydro uses a drawcord-and-stopper system instead of a chin strap, making it better suited to calmer conditions where a strap isn't essential, while the Bucket Bump Hat offers a wider brim for added sun coverage. The Surf model — the version used for this Green Hat collaboration — is the most secure of the three for rough-water use.

As a co-branded product, this cap is functionally identical to the standard Vaikobi Bump Hat Surf but carries Green Hat Kiteboarding branding. Comparable impact caps from other brands include the Mystic Shiznit Helmet Cap and the ION Surf Cap, both of which occupy a similar niche between soft surf hats and hard-shell helmets.
