Every Spring, I Come Back to Orient Bay

Every Spring, I Come Back to Orient Bay

Every spring, when Rochester, New York is still locked in gray and cold, I make the same move: fly south to Orient Bay, St. Martin, and spend a week on the water. I have done this three years running, and it has become one of the things I genuinely look forward to most.

The operation on the beach has changed hands, and the business is now called Tropical Ride. This past spring was my first season with the new owners, Julien and Léa, and I got to know them well over the course of the week. They are on the beach every day — often with their kids and Léa's mother — and they are native to the island. Julien is a former professional windsurfer with the kind of deep, hard-earned knowledge of wind sports that you cannot fake. It shows in how he talks about gear, conditions, and technique. These are not just rental shop operators. They are serious water people who happen to run a great business.

What does it mean to find a place that keeps getting better each time you return?

For wing foil rental at Orient Bay, Tropical Ride is the go-to. They run a well-stocked Cabrinha gear operation — wings ranging from small to large, foil boards in a wide range of volumes — and the equipment is dialed in for Orient Bay's typical 13-15 knot trade wind conditions. If you need a bigger wing or more board volume than you would normally ride at home, they know exactly what to put you on.

My first year visiting the spot, I rented everything. The last two years I have brought my own wing and supplemented with their board and foil. This year my son joined me again for his second trip — he is on the more beginner end of the spectrum — and Julien and Léa were excellent at sizing him up for the right board volume and foil setup. No guesswork, no upselling, just practical advice that got him flying.

Both years my son has joined me, we have done a full week rental for his gear. The system is refreshingly simple. Show up when you are ready to ride, and they will have everything rigged and ready. When you are done for the morning, you can walk off, grab lunch at one of the restaurants nearby, and leave the gear right there — they keep an eye on it. Come back in the afternoon for another session, or let them break it down and store it for the night.

Communication throughout the week was easy via WhatsApp, which is how they prefer to coordinate. Quick responses, no hassle. For a week-long wing foil trip, this kind of flexibility is genuinely valuable.

Going Above and Beyond

After our first day on the water, Julien pulled my son aside and did something that genuinely impressed me. Unprompted and completely free of charge, he offered specific technical feedback on what he had observed watching him ride. He could immediately see the mistakes — hip placement, posture, balance — and took the time to walk through exactly what needed to change: foot placement, hand position, hip alignment, weight shifting. He demonstrated it himself. Clear, precise, actionable coaching from a former pro who simply saw a kid who could be riding better and decided to help.

That kind of thing is not in the rental agreement. It is just who Julien is. For a beginner trying to get efficient pump and foil time, that single conversation was probably worth more than an hour of paid instruction. It is the difference between a transactional rental shop and a place run by someone who actually cares whether you improve.

One of my favorite parts of the whole setup is the shaded palapa picnic area right at the shop. My son and I would pull ourselves off the water, sit down in the shade, drink some water, and decompress between sessions.

This year his girlfriend came along on the trip — not a rider — and she was perfectly happy settled into one of Tropical Ride's beach couches with a book while we were out on the water. It is a welcoming spot for non-riders too, which matters when you are traveling with a mixed group.

Orient Bay: One of the Best Wing Foil Spots in the Caribbean

For anyone planning a wing foil trip, Orient Bay is a legitimately world-class venue. The reef on the southern end of the bay creates a protected flat water section — ideal for learning, for warm-up runs, and for working on technique without a lot of chop.

Head north and the prevailing southeast trades kick up rollers along the open side of the bay, where you can get into wave riding. Two completely different experiences within the same stretch of water. The bay also hosts kite surfers, windsurfers, and efoilers — but it is large enough that it rarely feels crowded.

If you have ever watched someone wing foil and thought that looks incredible — you are right. And Orient Bay is one of the best places in the world to find out for yourself.

What Could Improve

What Could Improve

What Could Improve

A couple of honest observations, offered in the spirit of a regular who wants to see this place thrive.

First, the quiver could use some midi boards. Prices on mid-length foil boards have been coming down steadily, and as they become more accessible it would be a great addition to the rental fleet — particularly for intermediate riders who have outgrown the big learner volumes but are not ready to drop to a performance short board. Totally understandable why a new ownership group has not gone there yet, and it is clearly on the horizon for the industry as a whole.

Second, a few 7-meter wings would be a welcome addition for light wind days. The previous ownership had a 7m in the quiver, and on those softer 10-12 knot days when the trades back off, it makes a real difference. Orient Bay's typical conditions are well-served by the current wing range, but having a couple of 7s available would round out the fleet nicely and keep riders on the water on days that would otherwise be a wash.

Neither of these is a dealbreaker — the core rental experience is excellent — and given that Julien and Léa are clearly passionate and knowledgeable, I would expect both gaps to get filled as the operation matures.

Bottom Line

If you are planning a wing foil rental in St. Martin, Tropical Ride is the shop. Julien and Léa run a tight, friendly, knowledgeable operation and clearly love what they do. The gear is quality, the logistics are easy, and the location on Orient Bay is hard to beat.

I will be back again next spring. Will you?
