Wing boards are purpose-shaped foilboards designed for use with a handheld wing. They serve as the platform between rider and hydrofoil, providing the stability needed to get up on foil and the responsiveness to carve, jump, or ride swells once flying. Wing boards are used across all skill levels — from first-timers learning water starts to experienced riders chasing downwind runs or freestyle tricks.
The most important spec when choosing a wing board is volume, measured in liters. Beginners typically start with higher-volume boards (roughly body weight in kg plus 40–60 liters) for easier water starts and more stability before getting on foil. As riders progress, they move to compact, lower-volume boards — some under 50 liters — that sit closer to the water and allow tighter, more responsive foiling. Board length and width affect how the volume is distributed: shorter boards are more maneuverable in the air, while wider outlines give more lateral stability during takeoff. Construction varies from durable fiberglass layups to lighter carbon or bamboo-reinforced builds. A lighter board with the same volume feels more reactive underfoot, which matters once you're foiling and the board is off the water.
A wing board pairs with a hydrofoil (mast, fuselage, front wing, and stabilizer) mounted through a track or plate system on the board's underside, plus a wing for propulsion. Matching board volume to your foil's lift characteristics and your local wind range keeps the full setup balanced.
